Our Schools (Overview)
Being an Avon Maitland student is an exciting opportunity for young people from across the world. The Avon Maitland District School Board welcomes international students while appreciating the diverse perspectives they bring to our classrooms and communities. We offer an excellent and affordable educational program designed to provide international students with a meaningful and engaging experience that fosters personal, academic and social growth. The program will provide educational opportunities for students 14-18 years of age, primarily in Grades 9-12. Additionally the Board provides intensive summer sessions of 2 or 4 weeks bringing together international students with Avon Maitland students for an enhanced cultural and education experience.
Secondary or High School Education
Secondary or High school is considered to be Grade 9 – 12 (age 14 – 18). Seven of the Board’s Secondary Schools are now grade 7-12 schools. Congregating intermediate students into secondary facilities in some areas has given these students access to advanced facilities and more specialized teaching.
One credit is granted for the successful completion of a secondary school course of a minimum of 110 hours of instruction. To graduate with the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), a student must complete 18 compulsory credits, 12 elective credits, 40 hours of community service and pass the provincial secondary school literacy test.
In a typical school year, the year is divided into two semesters with a student studying either three or four courses each semester. Secondary students can attend high school while preparing for post-secondary attendance at either Canadian College or University.
